Kohinoor diamond is the world’s biggest and the most expensive diamond. The exquisite piece of jewellery is now a part of the crown jewels in London. Here are some facts which you did not know about it.
- The 793 karat diamond was mined in India near the Golconda region, when the Kakatiya dynasty was reigning supreme.
Mohammed Shah gave the diamond it’s name Kohinoor which means “mountain of light.” Later Nadir Shah who invaded the Mughals in 1739 got hold of the Kohinoor and took it to Iran.
The Kohinoor was handed by Shah Shuja (a descended of Nadir Shah) to King Ranjit Singh of Punjab.
After the Anglo-Sikh war in 1849 Lord Dalhousie confiscated all the all property of the Sikh empire including the Kohinoor.
The diamond was taken to Great Britain and was handed over to the queen in the year 1850. The queen then got it re-cut and shaped in the year 1852. There is a curse on the diamond which states that “only God or a woman can wear it with impunity.”
